A ribbon board is for shaping wide petersham or bias fabric so that it will fit round the edge of a brim without wrinkling. The material is first wetted, then one end is folded over the edge of the ribbon board and pinned in place with two pins angled towards the centre of the board. The material is then wrapped continuously round the edge of the board, under tension, until the length is formed. The end is then secured with two pins as before. You should allow a little extra length so that you can cut off the two ends marked by the pins. The binding can be removed from the board as soon as it is dry, and sewn onto the brim. Angle the first pair of pins so that you will be able to overlap the pins with the material to obtain sufficient length without too much distortion. The easiest way to hold the board is on your lap while seated.

A stunning 3D five part saucer shape. The base of the block features one small groove at the bottom of the main shape followed by a gap and then a standard string groove. If you tie into both and cut off at the lower one, the resulting neck will flip up inside the top section and disappear from sight. You can even sew on your ribbon before flipping it in – very convenient indeed!

A traditional brim block for men’s trilby hats. Also known as a flange, this kind of brim is used for shaping brims that have already been cut to an even width and are often (although not essentially) used with a sandbagging machine. Rather than a string groove for the brim edge, there is a simple rope line around the base for tieing on a protective sheet only. Once blocked, the front is flipped down for a very classic look. BB97 is available in 5 different brim widths 1 7/8″ – 2″, 2 1/8″ – 2 1/4″, 2 3/8″ – 2 1/2″, 2 5/8″ – 2 3/4″ & 2 7/8″ – 3″. Please specify when ordering and also enquire about discounts for sets if you are interested. This brim also features a cutaway on the inside to allow a hat complete with band ribbon to be blocked or re-blocked.
